The Commission has been carefully considering the implications of the Government’s English Devolution White Paper on its work programme. In light of this, it has decided that this review should be paused for the foreseeable future. Should there be a change to the status of the review, this page will be updated.

Councillor numbers
The first stage of this electoral review is to determine the number of councillors who should represent the local authority in the future. The Commission has decided that the number of councillors in Southend-on-Sea City Council should be 51, the same as now.
Effective date
The Southend-on-Sea (Electoral Changes) Order 2000 was made on 5 June 2000.
The new arrangements came into effect at the May 2001 elections.
Final report
Our recommendations for new electoral and boundary arrangements were published on 2 November 1999.
