The Commission is required to carry out electoral reviews of council areas 'from time to time'. We are carrying out a review of Thanet as it has been a long time since the last review.

Initial consultation

We ask local people and organisations to tell us about their communities. The Commission has decided that the number of councillors in Thanet should be 42. This is a change from the current council which has 56.

Councillor numbers

The first stage of this electoral review is to determine the number of councillors who should represent the local authority in the future.

Effective date

The District of Thanet (Electoral Changes) Order 2001 was made on 1 November 2001.

The new arrangements came into effect at the May 2003 elections.

Final report

Our recommendations for new electoral and boundary arrangements were published on 9 May 2001.
