Have your say on councillor review

The Local Government Boundary Commission for England is asking local people to comment on its proposals for new democratic arrangements for the Council of the Isles of Scilly.  

An eight-week public consultation on the recommendations begins today and will end on 25 November 2016.

The Commission’s draft recommendations propose that the Council of the Isles of Scilly should have 16 councillors in the future, five fewer than the current arrangements. The recommendations also propose that 12 councillors should represent St Mary’s with one councillor representing each of the four Off-islands.

The full recommendations and maps are available on the Commission’s website at and Hard copies of the Commission’s report and maps will also be made available to the council.

Professor Colin Mellors, Chair of the Commission, said: “We are publishing proposals for new electoral arrangements for the Council of the Isles of Scilly and we are keen to hear what local people think of them.

“The Commission has looked at evidence provided by the council and councillors which we believe points to a reduction in the total number of members of the council.

“We also believe that there is a strong case for the Off-Islands to maintain specific representation so the proposals mean that Bryher, St Agnes, St Martin’s, St Mary’s and Tresco all retain one councillor each.

“Over the next eight weeks, we are asking local people to tell us if they agree with the proposals or if not, how they can be improved”.

Notes to editors:

1.   The Local Government Boundary Commission for England is responsible for reviewing local authority electoral arrangements, defining boundaries for local elections and the number of councillors to be elected, as well as conducting reviews of local government external boundaries and structures.

2.   The Commission is carrying out an electoral review of the Council of the Isles of Scilly Council following a request from the council. The Commission is also carrying out the review to improve levels of electoral inequality across the islands and to ensure that each councillor represents a similar number of voters regardless of where you live in the Isles of Scilly.

3.   Residents have from 27 September until 25 November 2016 to have their say on the recommendations. The Commission will consider all submissions and aims to publish its final proposals in December 2016. Once the Commission agrees its final recommendations it will lay a draft order in both Houses of Parliament. Parliament will then have 40 days in which to consider the recommendations. If both Houses are satisfied with the recommendations, the draft order will be ‘made’ and the new arrangements will come into effect at the council elections in May 2017.
