The Boundary Committee for England is to undertake further limited consultation on the council size of Norfolk County Council and revised county council electoral arrangements in Norwich as part of the ongoing review of the electoral arrangements.
The Boundary Committee now proposes moving away from its draft recommendations to adopt a council size of 84. This will provide the correct number of councillors for each district in the county based on the most up to date electorate figures.
Following the publication of its draft recommendations on 24 February 2004, which proposed an overall council size of 83, The Boundary Committee received revised projected electorate forecasts from the County Council for Norwich City. The Council stated in its submission that it had underestimated the 2007-projected electorate for Norwich in its initial figures. As a result of these new figures Norwich is entitled to 13 county councillors. For this reason the Committee has revisited its draft recommendations and is now proposing 13 single-member divisions to be coterminous with the 13 district wards in Norwich City.
Despite this additional period of consultation new electoral divisions will still be contested in 2005.
Commenting on the decision to extend the consultation period, Chair of The Boundary Committee, Pamela Gordon, says: We would like to invite further comment on the proposed revised council size from all interested parties during this period of further consultation. We would like to hear from people whether or not they agree with the proposals for a council size of 84. We are not, however, seeking comments on the draft recommendations for the other six boroughs and districts of Norfolk.
All submissions received so far are available for public inspection at the offices of Norfolk Borough Council and The Boundary Committee for England. Anyone wishing to make representations to the Committee on this matter should do so in writing no later than 26 July 2004 to: The Team Leader (Norfolk), The Boundary Committee for England, Trevelyan House, Great Peter Street, London SW1P 2HW.
