Commission's recommendations become law

2nd February 2011

The local elections in May 2011 will see new electoral arrangements come into force for the following eight councils: Bedford Borough, Central Bedfordshire, South Derbyshire, West Somerset, Stoke-on-Trent, Sedgemoor, Northampton and Mansfield.

Orders – the legal documents which bring the Local Government Boundary Commission for England’s (LGBCE) recommendations into force – for the eight local authority electoral arrangements are published today (2 February 2011). Recommendations for new wards in all eight local authorities successfully completed a 40 day period of parliamentary scrutiny and will come into force at the local elections on 5 May 2011.

On Monday 29 November 2010, the LGCBE laid eight draft orders in both Houses of Parliament to seek to establish the new boundaries for wards in each of the council areas. After completing the parliamentary process without successful challenge in January, the draft orders were made and registered on 29 January 2011 and are published today on the government’s legislation website. The electoral reviews for the eight areas, which were completed by the LGBCE in 2010, provide for electoral arrangements in each council area that are fair in terms of electoral equality as well as encouraging effective and convenient local government and reflecting – as far as possible – local communities. The orders to establish the new electoral arrangements – and their accompanying maps - can be viewed through the following links:
