For further details, resources and information about our review of the new Somerset West and Taunton Council, please see the review page for the authority, via this link.
In May 2018, Parliament approved the creation of a new local authority called Somerset West and Taunton Council. The council will replace the existing authorities of Taunton Deane Borough Council and West Somerset District Council.
The Commission is now carrying out an electoral review of the new council to decide the number of councillors that should be elected to the authority as well as the names and boundaries of council wards.
On 3 July 2018, we published draft recommendations for the new council, and began a public consultation on the new ward boundaries and electoral arrangements. The draft recommendations can be found here.
From 3 July until 27 August 2018, we will be asking for comments on our draft proposals. When the consultation closes, we will consider all the responses and then publish our final recommendations in October 2018.
All our final recommendations must be approved by Parliament. Following parliamentary scrutiny of the recommendations, the new wards and ward boundaries will come into force for the council’s first elections in May 2019.
